Baycol Death
A high number of Baycol deaths and other serious adverse events
had occurred, leading Bayer to issue a voluntary Baycol recall
in August 2001. On the market since 1997, Baycol had reports of
416 cases of rhabdomyolysis, including 31 Baycol deaths that led
to the company’s decision. Later, it was discovered that
over 100 Baycol deaths had been found to occur with the use of
the statin drug.
Although all statin drugs have been linked to instances of rhabdomyolysis,
a potentially fatally rare disease, Baycol was found to have a
much higher occurrence of rhabdomyolysis and of Baycol deaths
because of rhabdomyolysis. Baycol deaths were observed to occur
more often in patients using Baycol at a higher dosage, elderly
patients, and Baycol patients concurrently using gemfibrozil.
After Baycol was recalled, a large number of Baycol claims were
filed in response to the Baycol deaths and serious effects suffered.
After a federal judge denied class action status to several thousand
lawsuits against Bayer, shares sharply rose but may not remain
considering there are still 11,000 lawsuits nationwide pending
for Baycol deaths and allegations of rhabdomyolysis.
Bayer has been highly criticized for allowing so many Baycol
deaths and Baycol side effects to occur before taking any action
to recall the drug.
