What is Baycol?
Baycol, known under the drug name Cerivastatin (se-RIV-a-stat-in), is a cholesterol and triglyceride-lowering medicine. The drug works by lowering cholesterol and fatty substance levels in the blood. The idea, of course, is to help individuals reduce the levels of cholesterol in the blood vessels that can lead to stroke and heart attack. Baycol has been available in the U.S. since 1997. The Baycol recall of August 2001 affected the over 6 million people worldwide that were taking the cholesterol-lowering drug. Bayer, Baycol's manufacturer was criticized for allowing patients to continue using the cholesterol drug for such an extended amount of time despite the increased risk of fatality due to the condition rhabdomyolysis, a breakdown of muscle tissue causing renal failure and liver damage. Bayer slow to pull Baycol from the market

November 22, 2004

An editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association is one of just several articles to appear in next week's edition that focuses on the FDA's ability to effectively monitor drug safety. Following the September Vioxx recall, more critics have been questioning the FDA's capability to adequately monitor drug safety considering its recent track record. The ability for drug companies to influence federal regulation has also come under intense scrutiny.
